Greens alarmed by Maules Creek approval
The Australian Greens are alarmed by reports that Whitehaven Coal has been given state approval for its coal mine at Maules Creek.
“We shouldn’t be developing a massive, open-cut coal mine in the middle of 8000 hectares of old-growth forest at the end of the fossil fuel era,” Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens mining spokesperson, said.
“I am extremely concerned about allegations raised by experts that the offset proposed to compensate for the clearing of critically endangered box gum woodland is not even of the right ecological type, contrary to claims made by Whitehaven Coal.
“The federal government needs to complete its investigations into these allegedly misleading statements by the company before signing off on the offsets plan required under the federal conditional approval,” Senator Waters said.
